Book Review: A Dangerous Liaison with Detective Lewis

Author: Jillian Stone
Publication Date: August 28, 2012
Publisher: Pocket
Series: The Gentlemen of Scotland Yard # 2

From the author of the well-reviewed An Affair with Mr. Kennedy comes a thrilling new romance in the Gentlemen of Scotland Yard series, featuring Rafe Lewis and his jilted former fiancée, Fanny, as they embark on a high-speed race against the clock to evade a madman hell-bent on murdering industrialists and inventors.

Special Inspector Rafael Lewis hasn’t seen the woman he jilted on the night of their engagement ball in five years. Fanny Greyville-Nugent has spent five years working side-by-side with her recently deceased father, a captain of industry in the steam revolution. When Detective Lewis and the Scotland Yard suspect that the late Mr. Greyville-Nugent was targeted for murder by an anarchist group determined to stop the proliferation of machines in the workforce, Lewis must guard his former fiancée with his life—much to her chagrin.

As Rafe and Fanny set out across the countryside from Edinburgh to London, danger lurks around every corner, but the biggest danger might turn out to be the embers of their previously smothered attraction smoldering to life.

I have really gotten into reading Historical Romance here lately. It has always been one of my favorites, but now more than ever! I have read the first book in this series and absolutely love the author. Plus I love the covers of her books. They always look so seductive but never too seductive, if you catch my drift?! The colors always coincide nicely together and the ball gowns are beautiful. I love the way that they are staring longingly into each other’s eyes. It is so subtle but yet enough to display their chemistry!

Can I just say that I love what I do? I love being a book blogger and I love finding authors that continually remind me why I love doing what I do. Jillian Stone did it again with the second book in this series. The Gentlemen of Scotland Yard are not to be read lightly and one should be aware that there actions are, at all times, subject to change. The aspect that I probably loved most about this book was that it was not entirely romance. We are given a mystery story here with just a little romance on the side. Oh, I love a good mystery.

The only problem that I had with this book was the male character Raphael Lewis, otherwise known as Rafe. I loved the male character from the first book, Mr. Kennedy, but Mr. Lewis did nothing for me. At times I felt that he was dry and flat, but I do think that his chemistry with Fanny makes up for that. When Rafe was around Fanny I loved his character. He seemed much more suave and debonair in her presence than alone. There was such tension on the pages when they were together, so thick that you could cut it with a knife.

I haven’t read a book in quite awhile in which we deal with reunited lovers. Rafe and Fanny have been apart for 5 years and when they meet again, boy can you sense the reconnection? I felt like their relationship was one in which it did not matter how much time had passed they can pick up right where they left off. I know it is not that simple for Fanny, but it is obvious to everyone how she feels about Rafe. I just love their relationship. Fanny definitely brings out the best in Rafe.

Fanny is in grave danger in this book because someone is out to kill her. I loved Fanny’s spirit and her will to seek revenge towards her Father’s killer as well as putting Rafe through a little hell. She is such a spunky girl and often comes out of nowhere with some of the wittiest and most charming actions and dialogue. If I lived in this time I would want to be somewhat like Fanny. She is such a go getter and I loved how she plays hard to get with Rafe, it made the book all the morning interesting to read. I did not want her to give into him right away. I mean, come on, he left her for 5 years and now he realizes how he felt about her. Make him pay Fanny!

I was often reminded of Sherlock Holmes I read this book. I could picture each scene as it was taking place and I always pictured dark corridors, alleyways, etc. that you might find in any Sherlock Holmes film. Even the cover screams it to me! I am ready for the next book in this series, which the publisher has already kindly sent to me in the mail!!

***A BIG hug and thank you to Jillian Stone and her publicist for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review***
