Release Day Review: Ghost Seer

Ghost Seer (Ghost Seer, #1)Author: Robin D. Owens
Publication Date: April 1, 2014
Publisher: Berkley Trade
Series: Ghost Seer # 1

There’s just something about Clare. Apart from the ghosts...

When her eccentric aunt passes away, no-nonsense accountant Clare Cermak inherits more than just a small fortune. She receives the gift of communicating with ghosts. While Clare may not believe in spirits, it’s hard to overlook the shadowy talking dog appearing on her bed or spectral cowboys tipping their hats to her in the streets of Denver. And when she locks eyes with sexy—and living—Zach Slade, there’s certainly no ignoring him either.

A former deputy sheriff, Zach is leaving a painful past behind in Montana for a new life in Denver as a private investigator, a job that has him crossing paths with beautiful Clare. Not that she minds. After the restless ghost of a Wild West gunman demands her assistance, Clare finds herself needing Zach more and more—and not just for help.

She noted that his touch didn’t seem as cold as when she’d initiated the contact. Rules. There might be rules in this madness. In seeing ghosts…

Enzo hopped onto her bed, settled at the end, and said, We have to help the man that comes at night before those we met today. It’s his time.

I like the way you smell. I’m staying, the figment of her imagination, a “ghost” dog, said. It – he? – sat on the end of her bed.

I was first drawn to this book because of my newfound desire to read as much supernatural fantasy as possible! I started a brand new series in February and I loved it, so I was even more thrilled to find this brand new series as well. Clare and Zach, our main characters, are both facing major changes in their lives. I was intrigued by the pasts and secrets harbored by both characters and by the world that Owens created. This is the first book I have read by Robin Owens, but I can see why others swear by her work!

Clare’s gift is very intriguing, especially since the first time we witness it she is having a conversation with a ghost dog. At first Clare wants to try and run from her gift, but after her dear aunt passes away Clare not only inherits her fortune, but she also inherits her ability to communicate with the dead. She soon accepts her fate and begins to make the most of it. I must say that some of my favorite paranormal stories are ones in which the main characters are learning to tame their newly earned “gifts” and abilities. It is the most fun to see characters like Clare grow and come into their own. By the way, I really loved Enzo the ghost dog! He was a great detail!

Zach Slade is Clare’s counterpart in this series. Zach has his own interesting ability – he can sense when danger is approaching. He sees crows and the number he sees at a time lets him know just how severe the impending danger will be. He crosses paths with Clare after an injury keeps him from continuing his job as a police officer. With the help of Zach and Enzo, Clare sets off to help a ghost who seeks her out in order to get to the other side. Zach and Clare are an incredible due and I cannot wait to see what else the series has in store for them!
